Yoga can help enhance the experience of this wonderful time and empower the mother-to-be. Yoga enables women to enjoy their pregnancy with minimal discomfort, calming, cultivating breath awareness and strengthening the body in preparation for labour.
Pregnancy yoga differs from general yoga classes in several ways. Many classical poses are adapted to accommodate the changes in the body. For example, twists are open and poses are more fluid. This creates space in the body and helps to alleviate some of the common ailments often associated with pregnancy, such as: backache, heartburn, swollen limbs etc.
Breathing techniques learnt in pregnancy yoga can be used at any time during pregnancy. By learning to control the breath, women may feel empowered and more in control of their thoughts and body. Many women also find these techniques very useful when giving birth.
Many women who practise yoga also find that they regain their shape and fitness more quickly after giving birth. In addition, the integration of pelvic floor work is supportive in pregnancy, can be beneficial in labour and support recovery after birth.
Spending time in a pregnancy yoga class with other women can also be a lovely opportunity to form friendships locally.
Classes are suitable for anyone after their first trimester and you can try a class for just £10 – so come along and experience the benefits of yoga!
First class £10, drop in classes thereafter £12. Or save money and book a block of 6 classes for £65 (2-month expiry).
